Holland
Hope Collage is in Holland. I have an internship at Hope College. Therefore, I am in Holland.
Summer has been pretty sweet so far. "Work" isn't hard at all. I have 8 cool new friends. I live like 7 miles from gorgeous Lake Michigan beaches.
Top Ten Things I've Done in the 2 Weeks I've Been Here: 1. Gone to the beach 6 times. 2. Swam in the 50 degree lake once. 3. Had like 7 people over in my room to watch a movie (Yes, my single is that big) 4. Had a bonfire and smores on the beach 5. Thrown frisbees off the top of a dune and caught frisbees thrown from a dune 6. Declared war on the math research project whose office is next to mine 7. Stolen all the chairs (17 total) from said research project 8. Decided to do my modeling project on the flight of volleyballs and telephone poles (called caber toss, look it up) 9. Played competitive pickup ultimate twice a week 10. Had my room reach 92 degrees, even with 2 fans going full speed
Woot.

Summer Plans and Fall Schedule
Disclaimer: This entry contains a lot of information about the life of a future mathematician. If you haven't the stomach for that, you might not want to read on.
SUMMER! I've been home from Case since last Monday, a week ago. I've already read 3 books, including the first 2 books of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series. Very fun. Luckily for me, I got an internship this summer. I will be researching mathematics at Hope College in Michigan pretty much all of June and July. This is a Math Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU), so it's sponsored by the government and I get paid to do mathematics. I am in a "Modeling" program of a dynamic system (see http://www.math.hope.edu/2006projects.html if you are actually interested, my project is the last one listed). I'll live in a summer cottage with 6 other interns, not necessarily in math. I'll work 9-5, or something similar, every weekday. I have weekends and weeknights off to feed myself. It should be pretty awesome. I was lucky to get a position, because most of these internships are crazy competitive. One of the more structured internships at a somewhat more prestegious school sent me a "decline" letter saying that over 200 people applied for the 8 positions they were giving out. So I'm happy, even if I will be in Michigan.
FALL! I'll be back in early August, and don't leave for school til the 17th or something like that. There have been mumblings of a road trip to Niagara Falls before school, but I don't know if that will materialize or not. Either way, I'll be a real mathematician when I go back in the fall. I'm taking 4 math classes, a physics class, and a computer science class. Fear not, I can handle it. Here is my schedule:
Monday: 930-1020 Math 307 Abstract Algebra 1130-1220 Math 303 Number Theory 1230-145 Math 321 Analysis 2-250 Math 338 Dynamic Systems 3-350 Phys 221 Modern Physics Tuesday: 10-1115 Eecs 281 Logic Design and Computer Organization Wednesday: 930-1020 Math 307 Abstract Algebra 1030-1120 Eecs 281 Logic Design and Computer Organization 1130-1220 Math 303 Number Theory 1230-145 Math 321 Analysis 2-250 Math 338 Dynamic Systems 3-350 Phys 221 Modern Physics Thursday: 10-1115 Eecs 281 Logic Design and Computer Organization 115-205 Phys 221 Modern Physics Friday: 930-1020 Math 307 Abstract Algebra 1130-1220 Math 303 Number Theory 2-250 Math 338 Dynamic Systems 3-350 Phys 221 Modern Physics
No phys ed or sages this semester, thank goodness. Monday and Wednesday look brutal, but what the hell. I'll be rooming with Mike Druschel next year up on Phi Tau's floor in Clarke. I look forward to this summer and next semester.
Top Ten (Oh jeez, I haven't done this in forever): 1. Waking up with no concerns 2. Reading for fun 3. "Thirty thousand angry fans ripped Adam Dunn's head off at the ballpark last night" 4. Has it rained for 40 days and 40 nights yet? 5. I have almost completed an entire season (162 games) of "Ken Griffey Jr. Presents Major League Baseball" for Super Nintendo 6. Fixing the songs, but not the screen, of my Ipod 7. Trying to stuff all of my school room's stuff into my real room 8. 3 weeks of relaxation 9. Going to "work" studying math after 3 weeks 10. Ahh, summer

Axe
Last night I sprayed an entire bottle of axe into John Bear's room at 330 in the morning. John Bear was this year's Ultimate Frisbee president. I just thought everyone should know. It was funny. And smelly.
And before that, Chris made Clarke Tower light up. That was just pointless mayhem.
And now I should probably do the 10 page paper that I put off starting until the day before it was due.

Affirmative Fucking Action
In our color blind society, how can every research internship I look at have this in their opening paragraph:
Because of the shortage of minorities and women mathematical scientists, we are especially interested in, but not limited to, African Americans and other underrepresented minorities and women.
or
Women, underrepresented minorities and students from colleges and universities without significant research opportunities are strongly encouraged to apply.
Sweet... way to go by qualifications... this is discrimination

I hate journals.
My schedule for next semester is the same as the one I posted forever ago, except that I'm taking Human Evolution (T, Th 10-1115) instead of EECS 281. I also got into Nanoworlds for Sages, so I get to take a seminar class about nanotechnology which sounds relatively cool. Oh, and I have raquetball from 930-1020 mon. and wed. for the 2nd half of the semester. I know, you care.
I joined Phi Kappa Tau fraternity, if you didn't know. It's pretty cool. They have a floor in Clarke Tower. They're a dry fraternity with a buncha smart, good-natured people. And I got appointed Intramural Chairman for the next calendar year.
I'm gunna keep playing frisbee with Case. I'll post whenever I figure out when tourneys are.
What is everyone doing next summer? Internships? Jobs? etc? If you know of any good ideas for internships or jobs, leave a message.
And I leave you with this,
Top Ten Resolutions for next semster: 1. I will find an internship in math or a related science. 2. If #1 fails, I will get a good-paying job before school is out. 3. I will study a bit more so I don't fuck up an easy class like economics ever again. 4. I will tell the truth. 5. I will be nicer to Chris and the other guys in my quad. It's possible that I was an ass last semester. I'm not sure. 6. I will start to exercise at the gym in my free time. 7. I will goto every frisbee practice. 8. I will read books other than textbooks to retain my sanity. 9. I will stay awake during class. 10. I will be a better friend.
If I get 7 or 8 of those, I'll be happy.

I must be bored to update
Top 10: 1. My new e-mail is eric.webb@case.edu.... Everyone leave their new college email in the comment section 2. I sleep til noon, every day 3. I work nights, about 25-30 hours a week at Lonestar 4. Bryan and Drew went to Mexico for 2 weeks without telling me... I feel loved 5. Even though i don't do anything during hte day, it took me 3 weeks to read a 500 page book... so lazy 6. Orientation is July 17-19... I'm looking at taking Math 223(Calculus 3), Chemistry 105 or 111, Economics 102, and either Spanish 310 or Physics 122 (electricity and magnetism)... 7. I called and got AP scores: BC Calculus 5, English Lit 4, Spanish 4, Computer Science AB 4, Physics C Mechanics 4, Physics C Electricity & Magnetism 3... So I get credit in everything but the last one... I have 35 credit hours going into college... 8. Rosie has viral meningitis and swimmer's ear... no fun 9. Went to Kings Island finally two Fridays ago... Got stuck on top of Drop Zone for 10 minutes, rode White Water Canyon 6 straight times at night, and tried to high 5 chris (2 seats up from me) on Adventure Express... fun stuff... I don't have many more free tickets for people, but if anyone with a pass/tickets wants to ever go, just call me 10. Frisbee team is doing allright... we're 2-3, though one of our loses was 19-18 to an undefeated team... It's kind of annoying how I seem to have my best games when we're losing, however...

Get Lei'd
In case you didnt notice, i was vacationing in hawaii for the last 8 days... Ya, I was just with my family, but it was pretty awesome... We were in Maui for about 4 days and Hawaii (the big island) for like 3... and we were in airports for about 3 weeks... but oh well, i LOVE 9 hour flights :)
I'm not in much of a talkative mood, since i've been up for like 32 hours or something ridiculous like that, so here's a bare bones top 10 of my trip: 1. I swam with 5 turtles, on 3 different occassions 2. I almost swam into the turtles each time, cus i was snorkeling and staring down and they hover by the surface, and its really freaky when you suddenly find yourself 3 inches from a four foot long turtle 3. On the second island, we stayed in a hotel that had 3 pools, a lagoon, and a tram or boat to take us to our room 4. We drove the Road to Hana for like 12 hours 5. The Road to Hana consists of shitloads of waterfalls and beaches and one-lane bridges and stuff 6. I did not get sunburnt... thats a first 7. I saw a school of like 20 dolphins swimming and jumping just off the shore 8. Our helicopter volcano tour got cancelled after we had driven three hours out to the spot where they were supposed to pick us up 9. Imagine stuffing five big suitcases and five small backpacks into a two-door convertible with 4 people... yikes 10. I had a blast.
I missed you all too! Some more than others, but yeah. So I've been awake for forever (besides the stupid 20 minute naps i got while on the plane) and i have a frisbee game in 4 hours... Sigh... And I still need a job... Stress... I wanna go back to Hawaii

Quotes
The years almost over... Last year, if you remember, i quoted a shitload of stuff that my idiot teachers said... This year I didn't do it as much, but I've still got a few good ones... Enjoy:
(In chronological order) "Using a meter stick to measure Sarah Michelle Geller's bust size is inappropriate" -Reuter "I've got a thing for Buffy." -Reuter "I've got my Tigger socks on. I've got happy feet." -Jurgens "I'm right, you're a hypocrite." -Jurgens "You're going to college next year. You can't poke people in college." -King "You have no clue how Hilary [Clinton] is in bed." -Reuter "Playboy's tame, but you'll enjoy it." -Reuter "You're a greedy wheat farmer." -Jurgens "You can't make things actor-proof." -Colin Widmer, TX crew hand "They resent us because we're good at everything." -Jurgens "You have to make enemies before you can love them." -Alex Hunt "I have blacks in my family tree. No, really, they're still hanging there." -This was a joke, but still, I don't think I should put his name. "You make me look stupid, 'Fuck you'" -Wilkins "The answer is not the question; the question is how you get the answer." -Wilkins (Huh?) "Mr. Reuter likes to normalize and use standard deviation and such, so you never know if you're passing or failing or maybe a cucumber." -Kuhlman "3 of my classmates were sexual abusers." -Wilkins "Ahrens takes the air out of everything. I'd hate to be one of his kids." -Shawn Walker "Alex [Budkie], quit biting people." -Hoar "I don't exactly know what this slide means" -Kuhlman, trying to use Reuter's Powerpoints "OOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHMMMMMMMMM......" -Physics class "I think 'Mother Fucking Son of a Bitch' is much more appropriate than 'Oh, Poo'" -Wilkins "Schmidty, you're weird." -Michael "You don't get credit for your desires. That would be scary." -Ahrens "The Church, up until the 1960's, was a lot like the Taliban." -Wilkins
Not the 4 pages of quotes i had last year, but still good.

emails
umm... i send an email to a division 3 school about playing soccer, and this is the shit i get back?!?!?! ahhh!!!!
"Hi Eric,
Thank you for your inquiry into soccer at Case. We will have over 40 people out for the team this fall for only 26 spots. If you wish to try out, you will need to provide evidence of your ability to play before I can allow that to take place. Videotape would be the best. If I do invite you to try out, you will have to be able to run 1600 meters in under 5:45, complete 100 sit-ups in under 2 minutes and in good form as well as completing at least 40 pushups in good form. The second two have to happen with only 10 minutes rest after your timed run. Our summer training program begins at the end of May and I will need this information before then if you wish to pursue this. We have a very strong recruiting class coming in so I will share with you it is highly unlikely you will make the team if you do try out. With as many recruited and returning players coming out for the team, if your abilities are comparable to theirs, they will make the team before you. To make the team, you will probably have to be a starter. Based on what you have shared, I think that is highly unlikely. Finally, if you do make the team, you will have to train throughout the year participating in our weight training, conditioning, and out of season practices. Please reply to me ASAP if you wish to pursue this further.
Dan Palmer Men's Soccer Coach Case Western Reserve University"
fuck that
and another important email today... (wow, i never get important stuff, and here's 2 in one day)...:
"St. X / Urs. Ultimate team,
See below, from Ned, the format for tomorrow's tournement. It was just received, so I apologize for the late notice.
Note that we finished 4th in the regular season, which is spectacular for a first-year team.
HOWEVER, we are in the absolutely toughtest bracket of all, and we MUST come out to play in game 1 if we are to make a decent showing tomorrow. I have seen too many times that a team that plays well during the season collapses at the tournement, or a team that has struggled during the season comes out and clobbers all comers. I truly believe that each of our pool-play games are up-for-grabs and the two low-ranked teams are both better than their ranking.
Further, all the other teams in our bracket have played each other, except us. They will be much better prepared, and we have very little basis for evaluating them. Still, I will give it a shot. Our bracket includes: Game #1 = Sycamore (very under-rated at #9). I coached them last year, and Bob Schaedler is coaching them this year. He is good, and they are tough. They beat Moeller 15-4, and we barely got past Moeller (8-7) on a windy day. Still, they are only a second-year team, so we have a fighting chance. They may throw a zone, but I doubt it.
Game#2 = Walnut HIlls. Coached by Nick DiNardo, they are a veteran team that plays a tough zone, and has a lot of good athletes. Get psyched. Winning this game would make the whole season. Bear in mind that they beat Lebanon (who clobbered us). Play like professionals, with no mistakes, and we can win this one. They will not make mistakes.
Game #3 = Wyoming. Coached by one of YUC's most veteran coaches, George White, and one of the oldest teams in YUC. I coached them 2-years ago, but this year thay have mostly new people. They were a power-house every year until now, and could be a nasty surprise. They beat Sycamore, but lost to Lakota B, so anything could happen. Play your best game, and you will beat them. Lose your cool and you will lose your game. They may throw a zone.
Have a great prom, and see you in the morning.
Phil"

sigh
I guess since i'm not doing a damn thing tonight, i can update this... though i have discovered lj's to be annoying and overly-time consuming
things in my life right now: 1. ultimate frisbee... this has been very good for me and for everyone i think... we're 3-2 (so what if we have 2 forfeit wins) and ready for the tourney may 7th... i've met some great people through this and gotten to know some st. x'ers a lot better... yay (spelled w/o an i) 2. senioritis... this takes precedent over #'s 3 and 4, and it is all consuming 3. end of the year projects... every goddamn class is giving out gigantic projects for the end of the year, and at the rate i care about them right now, they will all get done the night before theyre due... 4. ap tests... i'm taking 5... spanish, bc calc, comp sci ab, english lit, and physics (2 parts)... none of which i have really studied for... dont know anything about lit or physics at all... things are going to get hectic 5. soccer... a month into the season and i still havent played a game... this is looking like a worthless season, though the team won 7-0 and 5-0 while i was away... we should rival west chester for the league title
i dont really having anything sentamental or thought-provoking to say... its raining... boo
top 10 for the last month, as always in no particular order: 1. i got a medal for being on the winning team in the ohio math olympiad... yay for smart asians from lakota west!... the medal has all this math shit on it and looks hilarious... i wore it during lunch today 2. on the way home from the competition in #1, ryan's car blew a tire and we got to change it on the side of I-70... it wasnt that bad, and anyway it delayed us getting to mom prom... i now know how to change a tire 3. nearly all the furniture on my ground floor is now in the garage... we are painting everything... party and a half 4. one of my dogs keeps falling down the stairs and tripping while running... she keeps making her left leg worse and worse... poor thing 5. i am having a hard time finding a prom date, with little miami's prom the same night and a lot of my non-lm friends busy that night... 6. a couple y-days ago, a handful of my friends went bowling during lunch and i bowled a 175 and a 191... i'm just excessivly proud of those scores, sorry 7. we need to go camping this summer so poor deprived rosie can say she has been camping at least once in her life... any suggestions as to time or place? 8. i nearly died from a throat virus a couple weeks ago... it still hurts sometimes... viruses suck 9. spring break was boring as hell... i dont even remember what i did during it 10. my graduation party is scheduled for june 4th... i invited a shitload of people, so if your invitation got lost in the mail and you wanna come, just tell me
oh, and if somehow you didnt hear, i am going to CASE WESTERN reserve university this fall... and, probably against my better judgment, i am rooming with christopher schlecter...
farewell

Today's Top Ten
Today at school was definitely abnormal. Top ten reasons why (you probably won't get all of them, don't worry):
1. I would be a mountain goat. 2. Matt squirting his drink out his nose because of #1. 3. In spanish we had to write another essay because Schroeder wasn't here. So we have 30 some minutes to write an essay in spanish. So I said, screw it, and make my thesis statement: "Los adultos estan de Venus y los ninos estan de Mars." I'll post the whole thing when I get it back... It was funny 4. Did you know that the binary number 11 = the base ten number 147? Me neither 5. In response to the space age chairs in the cafeteria, one table has a "bring your own chair to lunch day"... they dragged a couch in too... 6. I received further conformation that the less you try in english, the better you do... Merkel pointed out that I wrote the best paper for our last in-class writing 7. The second of two straight "do problems" day in physics... activities occurring in the room: blueprint reading(its the school newspaper), music listening, english reading, calculus homework, lunch, and random conversation... Moster was probably the only one doing physics 8. Bradley overhears our conversation before comp sci, and screams "what did you say!?!!?" d.j. says something stupid, and bradley takes the 'smart ass' over to the corner... d.j. later said that bradley thought we were saying buttfuck when we were saying budkie (again, its all budkies fault) 9. classes i slept in: calc, theology, am.dream, short story 10. feister brought in a plate full of sandwiches for some reason or other and i grabbed one... thanks man
thats about it
did anyone see odioso at the swimming ceremony yesterday? he seriously looked depressed... and when we sang the alma mater (which i am sick of talking about by the way), he stood with his arms folded and staring at the floor, even though he was right next to brower and i.t. lady... i think he's bi-polar
off to budkie's "party" later tonight... not sure how thats gunna turn out... cya

Weekend
I need something to do tonight... I've been home sinse like 2... Call me 3132852 or 6833849
Tomorrow: Housing Rehab, leaving early from it to goto my Penn interview though... Then maybe going to the st. x game vs withrow Sunday: Bowling with Jenny perhaps, need plans for the rest of the day... maybe i'll have an impromptu super bowl party
I'm an equal opportunity provider in my laziness/uncaring in school... here are my actions in all my classes, over the past two weeks: calc: said smart ass comment to ryan, mrs. michael hears me and says "while the rest of the class is going up, eric is heading down" or something like that... i said "i quit" loud enough for everyone to hear and a few to laugh theology: I changed the language of "Bruce Almighty" to Spanish before anyone got into the room, Wilkins goes "what the fuck" when the movie starts speaking spanish... Comp Sci: Nothing funny happened, but a general sense of worthlessness fills the room... oh, and moster thinks its cool to attempt to prove he's better at me at anything... he hasnt succeeded yet Physics: I made paper snowflakes out of old tests with colin's scissors... mr. kuhlman went "i dont get it" while explaining something Spanish: Mr. Schroeder stops me before class and asks me why i've been so tired this week... five minutes later i fall asleep in class Amer. Dream: titilation... thats all Short Story: Mr. Ahrens loadly tells me that i need to stay awake in class when the bell rings... I respond by snoring the next day we have class
Yay for me, right?
My dad bought the 2005 version of "US News America's Best Colleges" for some reason and i flipped to where they rank the schools... here are the schools I applied to: Best National Universities: 1. Harvard 1 (tie). Princeton 3. Yale 4. Penn 5. Duke 5(tie). MIT 35. Case Western 46. Rensselaer (RPI)
Best Undergraduate Engineering Programs (at schools where highest degree is bachelor or masters): 1. Rose-Hulman (at schools where highest degree is doctorate): 1.MIT 12. Princeton 16. RPI 22. Duke 28.Harvard 28. Penn 33. Case West 47. Yale
Best Business Programs: 1. Penn 2. MIT 25. Case West
So I applied to the top six schools in the nation... I equated engineering to good science/math programs, which i'm interested in... I think my college choices are pretty awesome... Now if only I get in and figure out how to pay for them...
Oh, and Mr. Rieselman today said he's rooting against my getting into MIT... Says it'll ruin me as a person or something... I was speechless
